This technical support document, developed as part of the Ipieca-IOGP Oil Spill Response Joint Industry Project and authored by the 11 organizations comprising the Global Oiled Wildlife Response System (GOWRS) Project, serves as a reference to illustrate what should be considered as international 'standards of practice' for animal protection and care in an oiled wildlife response.

The document provides an overview of the key concepts and solutions in oiled wildlife response preparedness, and explains how a higher level of integrated preparedness can be achieved. (Revision 2016)

This Oiled Wildlife Training video series provides detailed awareness of the activities (US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) or other Department of Interior (DOI) responders might take in response to an oil spill. Performing hands on activities with oiled wildlife should only be performed by trained professionals directly tasked under an official oil spill response organization.

The Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) is a statewide collective of trained wildlife care providers, regulatory agencies, academic institutions and wildlife organizations working to rescue and rehabilitate oiled wildlife in California.

Oiled leather has a heavily oiled finish that creates a durable and moisture-resistant surface. To clean, use a damp soapy cloth or sponge to remove any surface dirt, being sure not to oversaturate the leather. We recommend applying our Oiled Leather Restorer to maintain and keep the leather looking rich. To weatherproof the leather, we recommend applying our Beeswax Conditioner.

Most innovation teams inside large companies are set up to operate like well-oiled machines. They move in a specified direction at a predictable speed. Since the early 1900s, this model has been the prevailing paradigm for how organizations are designed and run.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in crude oil cause a range of adverse effects in oiled seabirds, one of the most common being hemolytic anemia via oxidative attack of erythrocytes by PAH metabolites resulting in hemoglobin leakage and formation of Heinz bodies. In such cases, haptoglobin and ferritin are up-regulated to sequester free Hb and iron in the circulation. We investigated these plasma proteins as biomarkers of PAH-induced Heinz body hemolytic anemia in oiled seabirds. Concentration ranges of PAHs, HAP and FT in plasma samples were 10-184 ng/ml, 0-2.6 mg/ml and 0-7.6 ng/ml, respectively. Dose-response relationships between plasma PAH exposure and haptoglobin and ferritin (FT) were investigated, and evidence of erythrocyte Heinz body formation studied in 50 oiled common guillemots stranded on the Norfolk Wash coast (East England). Haptoglobin was negatively correlated, and FT was positively correlated with PAH exposure. Heinz bodies were also observed confirming the toxic mechanism causing hemolytic anemia and counts were positively correlated with exposure. Our results support the application of these complementary biomarkers to assess hemolytic effects of oiling in wildlife biomonitoring, which also discriminate the influence of hemolytic versus inflammatory effects in oiled guillemots.

What should I do if I see an oiled bird? If there is an established oiled wildlife reporting hotline available, then please, call it as soon as possible. If not, then call your local U.S. Fish and Wildlife Office.

Is it true that liquid dish soap is used to clean oiled birds? Yes it is. Specifically, Dawn dish soap (not antibacterial) has been approved for use in cleaning oiled birds. Toward the end of August, Tri-State was activated again for a spill a bit closer to home, and the response operated from the Campbell Building. I responded for the third time, but this spill was an all-hands-on-deck situation, so the Zoo also sent Jen Sohl and Jen Kottyan (Avian Collection and Conservation Manager). Other members of the Paraprofessional Partners network also responded, and Tri-State had a team from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network on the west coast flown in to help. The sheer number of oiled geese recovered in the field required a huge number of trained personnel to adequately provide care. This time around, I spent a lot of time helping admit birds, and I acquired some new skills along the way under close supervision. Tube-feeding, IV fluids, and body condition assessment were all things I had been around in my career but rarely ever actually done myself. The volume of patients in this situation gave me the opportunity to develop these skills. Several days into the response, I switched onto one of the wash teams, and it was a full assembly line getting birds through the washes and turning over the wash line to accommodate the next patient. Our team alone cleaned 24 birds, and there were two wash lines going for the entire day. I have never been so tired or felt more fulfilled and essential to the effort of helping wildlife. Once again, I am just grateful to the staff at Tri-State for giving me the opportunity to help out. Sending off healthy geese to be released was a one-of-a-kind feeling.

OWCN has led more than 75 spills throughout California and cared for more than 10,000 oiled birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians during its history. The team averages a 50-75 percent success rate in recovering oiled animals and returning them back to a clean environment.

A recovery group is actively searching from north of Bolsa Chica to San Onofre on foot, in trucks, in utility-terrain vehicles and by boat for oiled animals. When birds are found, they transport them to a rehabilitation facility in Huntington Beach, where a field stabilization team provides basic care, such as warmth, nutrition and time to rest. A second facility in Laguna Beach is on stand-by should oiled marine mammals be found.

You'll see a lot of leather products and especially leather boots advertised as "oiled leather." It's a very common term, but because it's so generic you might not understand what a fuller meaning of the term actually is.

All leather is technically "oiled leather," because all leather gets oiled as part of the tanning process. However, what the term means when you see it in a product description is a leather that has been impregnated with a lot of it!

Typically, an "oiled leather" means a leather that has soaked in oil as part of the manufacturing process, to the point where somewhere around 10 to 15 percent of the leather by weight is the oil that it's been soaked in. That is what oiled leather is.

Oiled leather, depending on the exact leather in question, is some of the best leather for almost any purpose and certainly for footwear. Leather work boots and heritage boots in oiled leathers look great, are easy to care for, and are the easiest to waterproof.

The exact leather that's used makes a difference; a 4 to 5 oz oiled leather is going to make a work boot that's a little too soft and a 7 to 8 oz oiled leather is a bit too much for boots or shoes that you wear casually.

Oiled leather is simple to care for. It just needs to be oiled or greased every few weeks. If you want to shine it, you just need to buff it to get a matte-like shine to the leather. Light scuffs and scratches will buff out that way as well. Since the leather takes grease and oils so easily, that means easier waterproofing, but you have to be careful to pair the right treatment with the right type of leather.

Hot rolled pickled and oiled steel is steel that has been descaled of an oxide film and oiled to help fight corrosion. During the pickling process, hot rolled steel is descaled in a hydrochloric acid bath. The scale-free surface benefits forming, bending, stamping, and painting both in production savings and the quality of the finished part. The pickling and oiling process produces hot rolled steel that is durable and has improved formability while providing a cleaner surface for painting with a limited barrier to rust formation. Chesterfield supplies hot rolled pickled and oiled steel sheet & coil.

Oiled, greased or waxed leather is robust smooth leather or nubuck leather, to which a greasy - oily - waxy finish is applied. Often these waxes, oils or fats are also dyed and therefore such leathers have a slight risk of dye transfer. Such leather is labelled as oiled leather, waxed leather, pull-up leather, saddle leather or as vintage leather.

Soiled pull-up leather can be cleaned with COLOURLOCK Mild Leather Cleaner. Apply some cleaner to a soft cloth and clean circularly and evenly from seam to seam. Always test first in a hidden area and allow it to dry on its own. For heavy soiling, repeat the cleaning process. Heavily darkened areas can be additionally treated by carefully sanding the leather using the COLOURLOCK Leather Sanding Pad. 041b061a72
